Acclaimed chef (and co-founder of the successful Tapas Brindisa), José Pizarro has struck out on his own with José, a low-key neighbourhood sherry and tapas bar in Bermondsey. The no-booking policy means you turn up and wait for a seat (or prepare to stand) then pick something from the daily-changing menu which focuses on market-fresh ingredients in dishes both old and new, like jamón ibérico de bellota, juicy boquerones, razor clams a la plancha or crab and basil croquettes. The sherry list showcases tipples from both established and up-and-coming Spanish suppliers. Watch this space for details of the more upmarket Pizarro opening later this year.
