National Maritime Museum © High ArcticFor its inaugural show, the new Sammy Ofer Wing (funded by international shipping magnate and philanthropist, Sammy Ofer) at National Maritime Museum stages a groundbreaking exhibition ‘High Arctic’ (to January 8 2012) about the Svalbard. Regular visitors to the NMM might have expected the more familiar themes of Francis Drake, maps or boating but they’re in for a pleasant surprise: ‘High Arctic’ is a collaboration between United Visual Artists (UVA) and climate change charity Cape Farewell and is an interactive installation using sound, light and sculptural form to create an atmospheric, amorphous landscape made up of thousands of columns (each representing a glacier) to capture the ethereal strangeness of the sublime coast.

For info, see High Arctic listing.
