The Mercury nominations are in and they’re good: the biggest shock is probably the lack of controversial decisions. But who do you reckon is going to win? Elbow’s ‘Build a Rocket Boys’ is undoubtedly a spectacular record, but can even they pull off an unprecedented double win? The same goes for 2001 winner PJ Harvey, whose ‘Let England Shake’ is one of the strongest albums of her career. Will this be the year the rank jazz outsider (this year: Gwilym Simcock) scoops the prize, or will the ball be cruelly yanked away by the judges once again? Our money is on Adele (above) since ’21’ is the one record this year that everyone can agree on, but we would be just as happy to see Ghostpoet or Metronomy take the prize home.
