In the spirit of ‘make do and mend’ shopping, we’ve put together a list of the best Christmas Craft Markets for all those who want to cut down their consumer footprint and still have a jolly old jaunt. Lets face it, any alternative to the West End carnage at this time of year is worth a look in as well.
Christmas Craft Fair and Santa’s Grotto, Sutton House, 3 Dec, 11am-8pm and 4 Dec 11am-6pm
This craft fair promises lively events and masterclasses, mince pies and mulled wine. Oh, and Santa’s grotto for the kids (and the big kids in all of us.)
Curtain up Christmas Market, St Mary Abbots Centre, 4 Dec, 11am-5pm
This market offering collectibles, craft, vintage and all things bric-a-brac, will have you double taking at the recognisable stall holders. Famous faces will include actors from Bad Girls, Casualty, Coronation Street and Poirot and refreshments will be provided by celeb Master Chef finalist Julia Gray. Entrance fee £1.50 to be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Workshoppe, The Showcase, Clerkenwell, 7-11 Dec
Filling Santa’s sack with hand crafted and designer made goods, the Workshoppe is bringing us five days of shopping fun and an evening party with drinks and music on the Friday. All the young designers look set to be big so buy ’em now.
The Etsy Christmas Grotto, The Trampery, 8 Dec, 6.30-10pm
Bring along unwanted gifts or old favourites that are looking tired and it will get repackaged, redistributed and re-gifted to friends, family or charity for free. It’s a chance to learn to spruce stuff up and recycle, to help pinch the pennies and save the world in the process.
We Make London Christmas Fair, Battersea Arts Centre, 10 Dec, 11am-5pm
We Make London was set up three years ago by a group of designers who wanted an affordable place to sell their creations. At their Christmas fair there will be tree decoration making, present wrapping and over 80 designers shifting their craft.
The Water Poet Christmas Fair, The Water Poet, 10 Dec, 12-7pm
The Water Poet pub in Spitalfields holds this festive fair selling Haggerston Honey, Potter’s preserves and Alsur Spanish Produce, vintage homewares and handcrafted cards, with a chance to bag a gift or two with vintage. For the appetite you work up from shopping, there will be an all day hog roast and roasted chestnuts.
East London Craft Guerrilla, Vestry House Museum, 3 Dec; Ye Olde Rose & Crown, Dec 8
There will be an abundance of crafts from independent makers at the craft market at Vestry house with tombola and refreshments before they move on to their last craft event of the year at Ye Olde Rose & Crown where you’ll be able to buy your own Crimbo craft packs. There will also be retro hair styling and crafty workshops to keep you entertained.
Of Cabbages and Kings, Abney Hall, Stoke Newington, 3-18 Dec
This quirky east London shop will be hosting a craft market over two weekends in December where there will be different artists and makers every day. Mulled apple juice and mince pies are on offer too and rustic Christmas hampers will be available to order.
Sister Sledge Christmas market, Sassoon Gallery, 10 Dec, 2-8pm
Workshops at this market include tribal-print Santa hat making (!), and icing your own psychedelic Christmas gingerbread with biscuit decorating extraordinaires D’Oh. There will be live music, Christmas karaoke, great foodie gifts and vintage wares.
The Laundry Room pop-up, Fournier Street, 3-4 Dec, 10am-7pm
The Laundry Room is launching its Christmas pop-up shop in Spitalfields which is bound to be full of loveliness. They’ll be keeping you fed and watered with cakes and cocktails while you browse a smorgasbord of creative finds, from taxidermy and customised jewellery to original Dan Hillier prints and locally made ceramics.
Crafty Fox Market, The Dogstar, 10-11 Dec, 11am-5pm
With DJs, tea rooms and workshops from Oh Sew Brixton and Seaside Sisters, this craft market is super stacked with the artisan atmosphere of Brixton. Freebies are on offer too for the first 50 in the door.
The Ducky Christmas Market, Barbican Foyer, 10-30 Dec, 2-9pm
This crafty Christmas held in the foyer of the Barbican features the best of DIY gifts and homespun homewares with bookable workshops showing you how to create your own wrapping paper and presents.
