‘I want love to roll me over slowly, stick a knife inside me and twist it all around.’ It’s not the most conventionally romantic of February 14 sentiments, but then, Jack White isn’t the most conventional of singer-songwriters. The former White Stripe’s solo debut is a lowering slice of impassioned but minimal blues, delivered as a duet with Nashville’s soulful-voiced Ruby Amanfu and just right for the serenading of sweethearts. Although White’s line about wanting love to murder his own mother might unsettle those in the early stages of their relationship.
