‘Dalston is over, yeah?’ crooned the disaffected children of the East. Stoke Newington Road hath spoken back. This week sees the grand opening of Birthdays, a new bar/venue/self-styled dream-chamber located right on Dalston’s main drag. Born out of the walls of a neglected retail unit, the space has been rejuiced with an arsenal of party tools: a frightening sound system, a new stage and a rack of pumps stocked with craft beer. Of course. They’ve even got a kitchen serving food into the small hours. The ground floor bar will always be free, but entry to the basement may come at a small cost. Look out for parties by Land of Kings this weekend, and later events from Vice, NTS Radio, Off Modern and many more. Does Dalston need a new watering hole? Probably not but another one certainly can’t hurt. Will Davenport
