Pearly Kings and Queens are one of my favourite things about London. It isn’t just the twinkly mother of pearl buttons or the feathery hats (although I do love those), I particularly like the fact that for the last 150 years, this charitable pearly tradition has been handed down from generation to generation and is still going strong. This Sunday May 6, friends, followers and families will gather at The Carpenter’s Arms pub (2-7pm) to celebrate a new succession of button-covered wonders. Join (me and) them for a proper East End knees up. Go on, give it a pearl. Sonya Barber
