Boxer Tony Burns MBE and David Bailey were reunited for the first time in nearly 50 years at the opening night of Bailey’s East End exhibition on Wednesday. After seeing our magazine cover two weeks ago, Tony wanted to come and meet the man who captured him in headguard and gloves all those years ago. Another successful example of Time Out matchmaking – just call us Cilla Black! After a very successful career in the ring, fighting for the Repton Club in Bethnal Green and internationally for Wales, Tony turned to coaching, guiding some of Britain’s best including Olympic Gold winner Audley Harrison and John H Stracey and Maurice Hope, who went on to claim World Championship Belts. ‘David Bailey’s East End’ documents east London life from the early 1960s to the present day and is on display as part of Create 2012 at the Royal Docks in Newham until August 5.
