As sure as eggs is eggs, the Scotch Egg Challenge is back for a second year at the Ship pub on the River Thames in Wandsworth. Taking place on Tuesday September 25 (the main event’s at 7pm), twenty competitors will go head to head with their perfect version of the classic picnic treat. In the running this year is Heston Blumenthal’s pub The Hind’s Head in Bray, so let’s see what they come up with – triple cooked eggs perhaps? The egg-spert judging panel includes food writer Tom Parker Bowles, TV cook Gizzi Erskine and Eric Lanlard, owner of bakery Cake Boy. But the Ship haven’t put all their eggs into one basket. There’s also a pub barbecue to get stuck into, and scotch egg making demo from the shop that claims to have invented the sausage ’n’ egg-based snack, Fortnum & Mason.
