The butcher, the baker, the bespoke shirt maker, the white appliance supplier and the ukulele seller were among the 200 or so small businesses, shopkeepers and independent traders who met in a historic assembly this week to found The East End Trades Guild. The traders, whose motto is, ‘Together we are stronger’ met in Christ Church, Spitalfields to set up the guild, which is dedicated to protecting their businesses from rising rents, competition from chain stores and how best to trade in the economic downturn.

Taking its inspiration from the medieval guilds, the group hopes to provide a united voice for small businesses, as well as training and social events. The guild was formed after Gardeners Market Sundriesmen, a paper bag supplier in Commercial Street which claims to be the oldest family business in the area, was threatened with a rent rise from £15,000 to £25,000. After a fierce campaign fought by the store and locals, the rent rise was renegotiated as a staged increase and the store has been able to keep its doors open. Together we are stronger indeed…
