‘Do stupid things faster. Drink coffee!’ reads the well-known fridge magnet. Because let’s face it, Londoners excel at doing stupid things, fast. Might this be because we’re so wired? Coffee consumption continues to rise by 10 per cent year on year; one in three of us now visit a coffee shop daily, or so some surveys claim. And around 2,000 coffee shops cater for this demand in London alone; not just the coffee chains, but also the small independents. Many of these small cafés are well-run, focus on quality, and have baristas who care about customer service as much as the quality of their roasts. Guy Dimond
