With all that’s happening on dry land in London, it’s easy to forget about the city’s waterside happenings. As we head deeper into summer, the Thames will be providing the public with the kind of experiences you just can’t find on land, be it culinary cruises or riverside raves. Here’s five upcoming watery things we’re looking forward to this month…
1. Riverboat Food Festival
This weekend, 15 of London’s best street chefs will be ditching their land-based stalls and setting sail for three days aboard the Riverboat Food Festival. TwentySomethingLondon have teamed up with The Tamesis Dock, the floating pub on the Albert Embankment, to provide foodies with a slightly different edible experience. There’ll be five unique courses each night with a new menu each day, plus live music, flowing cocktails, and loads of great food. June 27-29. Find out more at twentysomethinglondon.com.
2. London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival 2013
If you’re walking by the London Regatta Centre this Sunday June 30, don’t be alarmed if you see 40 dragons cascade along the Thames. Manned by 20 paddlers and a drummer, the dragon-decorated boats take centre stage at the festival for the UK’s biggest Chinese sporting event. Alongside the oar-shattering action, there will also be (among many other things) traditional Chinese dragon and lion dancing, live music and a food festival. For more info, see lionsclub.co.uk.
3) Tropicalista Thames Boat Party
If you want to get a little samba in your step then hop on board the Dutch Master on Saturday evening (July 6) where London’s leading Latin club nights are joining forces for what they promise will be a hot and carnivalistic affair. Batmacumba, Arriba La Cumbia and Movimientos will be taking passengers on a four-hour journey of the best tropical beats. Leaves from Tower Pier. For more info, see their Facebook page.
4) SMARTIE PARTIE Boat Party & Ministry of Sound after-party
The Golden Sunrise Boat will be providing revellers with a weekend of river-raving as they emulate an Ibiza club vibe on the very Brtitish (and probably less sunny) waters. Expect funky house, uplifting techno and dirty disco while soaking up the sights. Stamina is needed for this one, as the event starts early and rounds off with a shoreside after-party. July 6-7, leaves from Tower Pier. For tickets and to find out more visit their website: smartiepartie.com.
London Furs: Summer Weekender
Animal obsessed LondonFurs will be setting sail from Tower Millennium Pier on July 19 to kick start their Summer Weekender. LondonFurs are a growing community of creative artists, costumers and fans of anthropomorphic animals so be prepared for lots of flamboyant and vibrant outfits (not mandatory) as you shake your tail along the Thames. The theme of this party is ‘Dia de Los Muertros’ aka Day of the Dead so get out those skeleton costumes. For more info, see londonfurs.org.uk
