Over the past 76 years, Earls Court has seen acts including the likes of Pink Floyd, Queen and Elton John set foot on its stage, but the legendary venue is soon set for a final curtain call after an agreement was finally struck for its demolition.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has given the green light for a 77 acre £8 billion pound redevelopment which will not only see the demolition of Earls Court, but two local housing estates, as well as a nearby rail depot. Developers stress that 7,500 new homes will be provided across the construction of four new ‘villages’ and a ‘high street’.
The 20 year-long redevelopment across the boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham has attracted swarms of criticism, with Green Party London Assembly Member Darren Johnson stressing: ‘Boris Johnson is condemning this part of London into [being] a playground for the super rich.’.
