National Theatre Watch This Space

At the start of the year, National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner told us that Watch This Space – the NT’s outdoor festival of free performance – would not be happening this year, as whacking great temporary venue The Shed was occupying its usual site.

Fast forward six months, and we are having a bloody great heat wave, which may or may not have influenced the NT’s rethink, as a mini version of Watch This Space will be happening after all, in the gap between The Shed and the NT building proper.

Running Aug 2-31, Watch This Space… August Outdoors (as it’s dubbed) is on a smaller scale than normal, but packs in plenty of fun, starting with ‘The Sneakers and The Streetlights’, Half Human Theatre’s oddball rendition of rock’n’classics (Aug 2, 1.10pm and 6.30pm) and ending with  Ella Good and Nicki Kent’s ’80s power ballad-themed musical hairstyling experience ‘Total Eclipse of the Head’ (Aug 31, 1pm-7pm). In between there are all sorts of weird and wonderful experiences, including kids’ show ‘Caravania!’ (Aug 24, noon-6.30pm) and the Natural Theatre Company’s ‘Pigeon Poo People’ (pictured, Aug 10 1pm, 3pm and 6pm), which, er,  it’s probably best you just see for yourself.
