It’s a snip: London’s best free (or nearly free) haircuts

Leaving the hairdressers with a shiny new ‘do may feel great, but a trip to a trendy London salon can cost a small fortune. If you want a new look, a proper shampoo and a sleek blow dry without shelling out silly money, book a session as a model at one of these top hair salons. Most offer cuts and colour by trainees for free or a small contribution – which beats trusting your best mate with a pair of blunt kitchen scissors.

Most free cuts are supervised by an experienced stylist who will discuss with you whether you’re after a classic trim or a roots touch-up. At more fashion-forward places like Vidal Sassoon’s Creative Academy, your hair will be transformed into an asymmetric artistic creation by an expert in front of a group of students. Just try not to flinch too hard if they mention ‘erratic sectioning’ or an edgy ‘shaved hairline’. Chances are you’ll be delighted with your cheap chop, but if not, don’t worry – the difference between a bad haircut and a good one?
