What with bars, galleries and shops popping up all over the place, it was only a matter of time before trees wanted a slice of the action. And here they go – a forest is popping up around the Seven Dials pillar in Covent Garden today (sep 21). Sixty five-metre high trees will be potted around the central monument to celebrate international car free day, providing weary shoppers with a handy woodland escape in which to lose their whining children and reconnect with nature (sort of).
There will be activities going on throughout the day including ‘Breath Drawing’ sessions (yep, no idea) by Kings College London, live music, face painting and free bike maintenance and anti-theft marking by Dr Bike. The aim of the day is to encourage people to use greener modes of travel and reduce air pollution levels so expect plenty of good free advice on how to keep your carbon footprint to the minimum.
We know what you’re thinking; navigating the streets of Covent Garden on a Saturday is trying at the best of times without the added complication of a forest to negotiate. That may well be true, but it’s for the good of the environment. Plus it’s free and they’re giving out popcorn and pizza! Everyone’s a winner. Millie Walton
