Chain gang: can restaurant sequels ever be as good as the original?

Chain eateries aren’t our favourite places, but we’re usually delighted when a much favoured restaurant decides it’s time to expand and opens a second (or third, or fourth…) outlet. Especially if the original is often booked up or packed out, or on the wrong side of town. Fortunately, there seems to be a veritable splurge of new branch openings coming up in the next few weeks. Here they are, in chronological order:

Burger & Lobster (above)
Fifth Floor, Harvey Nichols, 109-125 Knightsbridge, London, SW1X 7RJ.
Opens: November 6

Does just what it says on the tin. Steadily spreading its claws across town, with branches in Soho, Mayfair, Farringdon, the City and – now – Knightsbridge.

Sticks n Sushi
11 Henrietta Street, WC2E 8PY.
Opens: November 9

The Danish sushi chain has obviously done so well in Wimbledon that it’s decided to make a move on the centre of town – Covent Garden, to be exact.

Tommi’s Burger Joint

Opens: mid November

A second branch, this time in Chelsea, for the back-to-basics Icelandic burger restaurant.

Chicken Shop

Opens: November 22

The south London spin-off of the hugely popular and trendy Kentish Town rotisserie chicken place (part of the Soho House group).

Franco Manca
98 Tottenham Court Road, W1T 4TR.
Opens: late November

London’s favourite pizza parlour opens its first West End branch – and sixth in total. Will it continue to duplicate the success of the Brixton Market original?

127 King’s Road, SW3 4PW.
Opens: late November/early December


Seating 100 across two floors, with a similar burger menu to the Soho original, as well as brunch.

Wright Brothers Spitalfields

Opens: December 2

The third branch of the oyster and fish specalist (after Borough Market and Soho) will have a tank containing live shellfish, and a marble bar serving cocktails and craft beers.
