Wong Kei in Chinatown is a restaurant that has long had a reputation for cheap food… and brusque service. Two decades ago I was even told ‘You fuck off then’, because I disagreed with a waiter who wanted me to share my table with strangers. But on repeat visits in recent years, I’ve found the service perfectly perfunctory and reasonably polite, no worse than the norm in several other West End restaurants.
Wong Kei looks set to shake off its past reputation once and for all this spring, as the 500-seater restaurant is at last having a refurbishment. Let’s hope the rock-bottom prices continue though, as for many backpackers and students, Wong Kei is one of the few affordable options in our otherwise dauntingly overpriced West End. Guy Dimond
