You had to be Speedy Gonzalez to have nabbed tickets for this taco tasting comp (the 500 spaces sold out in less than 24 hours), but fear not, you can still get into the tequila soaked after party. During the day, street food vendors including Bob’s Lobster, Benito’s Hat and last year’s champions Luardos will be whipping up imaginative takes on the basic tortilla, salsa and toppings blueprint, throwing in influences from Japan, Korea and the Deep South to confuse your taste-buds.
After the winner is crowned at 6pm, creative tacos from the competing teams will be available at the evening event – which does double duty as the closing party for urban food market Hawker House – and you’re going to need them to line your stomach. Alongside a tequila bar, a big yellow cement mixer will be churning out margarita cocktails in flavours like raspberry and hibiscus and the appropriately lethal-sounding El Diablo. There are 1,500 tickets up for grabs on the door for the after-dark event, so don’t worry about being the fastest mouse in all Mexico for that fiesta – just get there before last entry at 11pm.
Hawker House, 38-50 Pritchards Rd, E2 9AP. Cambridge Heath rail. Main event (sold out) £35, evening tickets £3 on the door. Main event noon-6pm, evening event 6pm midnight (last entry 11pm). Sat Mar 29.
