This morning on Time Out London we launched our list of the 100 best animated movies, as voted for by over 100 experts in the field – directors, animators, writers, critics, bloggers and scholars. Among them are ‘Wallace and Gromit’ legend Nick Park, ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ director Wes Anderson, the artist and sadly late HR Giger (who loved a bit of ‘Finding Nemo’, amazingly) and the creative minds behind ‘Frozen’, ‘Toy Story’, ‘Ice Age’ and just about every other hit animated film of the past 20 years. The list will surprise you: this isn’t just a countdown of the obvious Disney, Pixar and Studio Ghibli favourites, it’s also studded with obscure gems and thrilling leftfield oddities, from DIY masterpieces to psychedelic experiments. We’ve also attached a whole heap of connected stories, including our countdown of the best and worst from the 53-film Disney cartoon collection, a list of the 30 best short animated films (with clips for each one), and guides on how to get started as an animator yourself.
So how many of our top 100 animated movies have you seen? Are you an animation expert or a cartoon newbie? Check out the full list at timeout.com/animatedmovies for an eye-popping celebration of a century of animated film, then tot up your tally on our handy checklist.
