Patrick Edwards’ Insta-travels take him from Uxbridge to Upminster, from Wimbledon to Walthamstow, as he tries to capture images of the sights that have ‘captured’ him.
We asked him to give us a tour of London via his Instagram account: @solar.patrick. 1. Out of all your pictures of London, which is your favourite?
‘It’s probably this one of the Bank of England. I took it from the Leadenhall Building during Open House. I used a standard Instagram filter to blur the edges and it gives the building a ‘model toy’ look. Plus, it’s an angle that not many people see it from.’
2. What’s your favourite landmark to snap?
‘The Thames. I love all the different communities and architecture that can be seen along the length of the river, from the classical beauty of Richmond to the dockside romance of Wapping and the industrial glory of the docklands. This picture is of a little church I came across in Wandsworth. I love how it stands so close to the river and has a modern building directly behind it.’
3. What’s your go-to filter?
‘Sometimes I use Snapseed or Touch/Retouch, but usually I just use the standard Instagram filters. I don’t like to filter my pictures too much, as my aim is always to present what has caught my eye, rather than altering the image. Sometimes though, the temptation is hard to resist if it enhances the picture!’
4. Is there a photo you’ve taken that’s been unexpectedly brilliant?
‘I took this picture when I was exploring Southwark and came across the Crossbones Burial Ground. It’s the wooden boarding covering the graveyard and it just really struck me as beautiful. A lot of people (myself included) have a real love of the underground and I guess the image resonated with a lot of people.’
5. Where’s the best view in London?
‘There are so many to choose from! I want to say something like the view from Waterloo Bridge at night, but I think I’m going to have to admit that nothing fills me with more joy than walking down a street and discovering a hidden treasure hiding down an alleyway or off a side street. London has so much to reveal to those who make the effort to look, it never gets boring.’
