Remember the upside-down house on Blackfriars Road in Southwark? Y’know, the one that looks like a house but it’s er, upside-down? If not, let us refresh your memory: back in 2013, artist Alex Chinneck decided to shake things up on Blackfriars Road and turn this house upside down. And he didn’t do anything by halves either – every tiny detail on the outside façade has been flip-reversed, right down to the bricks. Yes, apparently there’s a right way and a wrong way up to lay bricks – who knew?
But sadly, the upside-down house has had its day. The site was bought last year by a company called Black Pearl, which recently told local residents and businesses that the buildings on the site will be demolished in June. While we bid farewell to the upside-down house, hopefully Chinneck will carry on making things in London a bit topsy turvy – earlier this year he hung a car upside-down at the Southbank Centre, and he’s also made a melting wax house and got Covent Garden to float mid-air – surely it’s only a matter of time before he’s turning the Shard on its pointy head?
